Bigfoot Express Freight is an independent break bulk logistics company which has been in existence for over 20 years. Established in 1989 by husband and wife Sun Moodley (CEO) and Rina Moodley (MD), Bigfoot Express initially started out by offering next day service between KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. However, now the company has national branches in six major South Africa cities; Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Bloemfontein.

Bigfoot Express Freight's slogan 'big to small - we haul 'em all' is testament to the company's ability to adapt to individual customer needs, something which separates it from others in the industry according to Financial Manager Ugesh Govender. “Our unique selling point is our flexibility and attention to customer detail. We are also very technologically advanced; we allow it to enhance our service delivery,” notes Govender.

Recent developments at Bigfoot Express include a brand new R25 million depot in East London which the company built from scratch. Seeing as the company has now outgrown its operational base in Johannesburg as well, a similar project is due to take place there imminently.


Currently Bigfoot Express employs 350 people, with several members of staff having been at the company since its inception. Encouraging staff to develop their skills within the company is one of Bigfoot Express’ continuous improvement strategies.

“Once new staff are in entry level positions we try to retain them by sending employees on courses to encourage promotion through the ranks,” asserts Govender. “We also send our employees on courses which we can reclaim from the government for skills yet.”


Buidling strong, long-standing relationships with key clients and customers is essential for Bigfoot Express to remain successful. Partners including vehicle supplier Volvo, Tyre Corporation and Masana Petroleum Solutions are essential in the day-to-day running of the business. While current customers like Nampak and Freddie Hirsh Group have come back to Bigfoot Express time and time again due to its dedicated customer support.

“We are always willing to go the extra mile for our customers,” says Govender. “Customers are always looking for greater value with the reduced amount of costs associated and because of our flexibility we can fit in with what clients ask industry.”


Looking forward, Bigfoot Express hopes to expand beyond the country’s borders and have a bigger footprint across Africa while still maintaining the same levels of superior customer service.

“We want Bigfoot Express Freight to become more involved in greater Africa and create a bigger national presence. The company itself has grown over the last 15 years to become a local reputable name. Based on that we are looking to leverage into greater Africa and increase our market share,” Govender concludes.
