South African firm Exxaro Resources has announced that it will team up with Indian energy giant Tata Power to develop energy generation projects in Africa.

The 50/50 joint venture, named Cennergi Pty Ltd, has submitted bids for five wind and solar energy projects on the continent.

Tata Power Managing Director Anil Sardana said that Cennergi would focus on “investigation of feasibility, development, ownership, operation, maintenance, acquisition and management of electricity generation projects in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia".

Sardana added that Cennergi would also look at "coal as well as coal bed methane-based power projects".

Cennergi is set to launch in April 2012 Cennergi, formed between Tata Power's subsidiary Khopoli Investments Ltd and Exxaro.

Exxaro's CEO Sipho Nkosi said Cennergi is expected to play a key role in African electricity generation market. The continent’s energy supply, heavily reliant on coal, suffers from frequent interruptions.
