Many companies in South Africa employ security personnel as their first line of defence in shop fronts or as part of their business operations. However, when a security ‘incident’ occurs, in reality it is often difficult to assess the liability of the parties involved. Incidents are usually dealt with ‘after the fact’. SerVision’s real time low bandwidth streaming allows the control room to view the activity of the incident in question via GSM or WIFI and respond accordingly in real time. This is according to Mark Chertkow, Managing Director, at Graphic Image Technologies (GIT), a company that specialises in mobile and remote closed circuit television (CCTV) and control room technologies.

“Security management teams have to rely on the guard's version of events or eye witness accounts, without having a comprehensive view of the reported incidents as they happen. This can have serious implications. Complaints against security personnel have the potential to cost them their jobs as they have to prove their standpoint from their version of events alone. Often it comes down to a 'he said, she said' scenario and companies face a difficult task to take decisive action if necessary, be it legally or otherwise. The additional live access moves the solution from a post-event analysis tool to a real-time proactive solution,” says Chertkow.

He says there has always been a need for a fully fledged wearable CCTV solution that is affordable, allows for live streaming of the CCTV and forms part of an organisations' CCTV operation, but technology and cost constraints have hampered deployment in the past.

“Traditionally wearable closed circuit television CCTV security solutions were bulky and uncomfortable to carry around for long periods of time, and also not easy to use or rugged enough to withstand everyday wear and tear. In addition, they do not allow for live viewing of the CCTV pictures.

“Also, while being able to log events, video recording was limited to due hard disk drive space constraints and guards had to resort to recording as and when incidents happen and then download it later at their control centres. As a result, there was often no accurate representation of the chain of events to legally protect the jobs of the guards and reputations of their companies,” he adds.

In response to this, SerVision developed a lightweight wearable CCTV security solution - the CVG-M video gateway unit – using proprietary video compression technology to transmit and record live high quality video with the use of its built-in 3G GSM module or Ethernet interfaces.

Says Chertkow: “The unit is compact enough to be worn comfortably by security personnel for long periods of time and is powered by a 12V portable battery. Housed in a small hip pack or backpack, the CVG-M sports an internal cellular modem and supports two video inputs for live streaming, using miniature cameras as well as an audio input which is connected and mounted on a shoulder strap.”

It also features a built-in GPS module, which allows management to track the location and movement of the on-duty guard at all times.

“The miniature cameras and microphone fit on the shoulder strap or helmet of the guard, which makes it well-suited for undercover operations. The live video feed is recorded and accessed directly by high-level control room personnel and first response teams either via a mobile device or on site.”

“Should the unthinkable happen to one of the security personnel, the probability of the perpetrators getting caught thanks to the video and audio surveillance is significantly higher,” he says.

Concludes Chertkow: “The unit allows organisations to spend less time on assessing wrongful accusations, and also increases the accuracy of the security incident reports, making staff more efficient and productive, with the assurance they have proof to back up their version of the disputed incidents. In addition, the CVG-M provides a proactive support element to your guarding solution.”

	A New Source

A newly discovered water source in Northern Namibia has the potential to significantly boost the region, one of the driest in sub-Saharan Africa.

The aquifer, called Ohangwena II, which flows under the border of Angola and Namibia, would be able to satisfy the needs of Northern Namibia for 400 years at current consumption.

Water is the most precious of resources. The 800,000 or so inhabitants of Northern Namibia currently rely on a 40-year old canal which transports water across the border from Angola.

	Sustainable Project

A sustainable water supply is the first priority for any developing country, and Namibia’s government is hoping that the new source will be managed effectively and sustainably, decreasing the country’s reliance on European aid, and instead moving towards European investment.

Despite its age, the water is safe to drink. Martin Quinger, from the from the German federal institute for geoscience and natural resources (BGR), has said that despite the age of the water, it is still safe to drink, and may infact be safer due to the time it has spent away from environmental pollution of open sources.

"If the water [has spent] 10,000 years underground, it means it was recharged at a time when environmental pollution was not yet an issue, so on average it can be a lot better than water that infiltrates in cycles of months or years."

When it comes to travelling in South Africa, two names never take long to make an appearance, Johannesburg and Cape Town. The country’s first and second largest cities respectively both have been popular destinations for either business and pleasure for years. But now it would seem there is a new kid on the block, Durban.

Situated on South Africa’s east coast, Durban is the largest city in the KwaZulu-Natal province and the third largest in the country. Famous for having the country’s busiest port, the recent MasterCard Global Destination Cities Indexhas predicted that Durban will not only be this year’s fastest-growing city in Africa, it would be the second-fastest growing tourism city of the 132 cities surveyed worldwide. The accolade follows hot on the heels of US news network CNN naming Durban as one of the ten most underrated cities in the world, along with others including Darwin, Australia and Lisbon, Portugal.

Often overlooked in the past, Durban has experienced a boom since becoming the host city for the 2010 World Cup, resulting in the construction of the impressive Moses Mabhida Stadium– more than worth a visit to the city on its own. Supporting the roof and rising 106m (348ft) above the pitch, the striking arch is just one of the stadiums notable features; others include a football museum and sports institute. Moses Mabhida also caters for business needs, with a presidential atrium, exclusive restaurants and VIP conference rooms, perfect for hosting anything from annual meetings to product launches.

Aside from Moses Mabhida, there is also the ICC Durban, formerly the International Convention Centre, one of the most advanced conference facilities, not only in Africa, but in the world. Located in the centre of the city, and only 15 minutes from the airport, the centre features three individual halls which can be opened up to create one expansive space . Adjacent to the Durban Exhibition Centre, which has two large halls itself, both centres can be opened up and joined to accommodate up to 10,000 visitors. The space on offer can be fully-customised and modified to suit any event, be it awards banquet, conference or exhibition.

Once business has been concluded Durban offers a variety of activities ranging from the vast Suncoast Casino complex, to a multitude of relaxing golden beaches, nearby World Heritage Sites–the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the Drakensberg Mountains, Ushaka Marine World– with one of the world’s largest aquarium, and the Golden Mile – a stretch of beachfront blending traditional market vendors with contemporary restaurants and bars.

It may come as a surprise to some that Nigeria’s film industry, Nollywood, produced more films last year than both Hollywood and Bollywood. Although the sheer number of films produced varies between 1,000 and 2,000 films per year, the annual turnover is only around $250 million, according to Emeka Mba, director-general of Nigeria’s National Film and Video Censors Board

Last year the industry experienced a huge amount of investment from both Nigerian and South African banks, including Nexim Bank (Nigerian Export – Import Bank), to encourage more filmmakers to fund projects; the likes of which are improving all the time.

In his 2008 TED talk on the subject, Zambian film maker Franco Sacchi, who works in Boston, said that he believes Nollywood is the perfect location for foreign filmmakers to develop their cinematic ideas due to relatively cheap production costs and general positivity of the industry. Nigerian directions have the zest for raw filmmaking that only an emerging market can truly appreciate.

Despite promise in the future, Nollywood still very much holds a supporting role in the world film industry with the quality of the production output generally considered to be of a lower standard than other locations. However, if investment continues and foreign expertise is used to good effect in the region, there is no reason why Nigerian film exports could not increase drastically in the years to come.

Five Hundred residents of Woreda 11 in Ethiopia recently collected signatures for a petition to demand the removal of a two-hectare asphalt plant run by the Chinese Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

The plant, which has the capacity to produce 960tn of mixed asphalt using diesel machines, was supposedly damaging the health of local residents. The locality complained about the dust and smoke being released into the air by the plant, affecting themselves and the three schools in the area.

The Chinese contractor has not denied the allegations: ‘We understand that the dust and smoke can be harmful to residents in the area – they are right to ask their Woreda to take action’, said Mr. Peng of the CRBC, who defended the Chinese action by saying that ‘the plant was there 10 years ago, before there were residents in the area.’

The petition has now been handed to the District by Woreda 11, and the residents are now waiting for a response.

However Peng maintains that the CRBC would be willing to relocate the plant as soon as an alternative location becomes available, as long as the new plant is close to the project.

The study, conducted by Mercer Consulting analysed 214 cities across the globe, citing New York City as the benchmark. Mercer’s annual survey, which looks into the cost of living, is used by multinational companies to determine compensation for expatriate employees around the world. The results are based on more than 200 individual factors including housing, transportation, food, clothing and entertainment.

This year Luanda, the capital of Africa’s second largest oil producer Angola, has been named the second most expensive city to live in across the globe. Angola has become the third-largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa after South African and Nigeria owing to an ‘oil boom’. Crude oil sales account for over 95 percent of its export revenue, and the government expects GDP growth of 12.8 percent in 2012.

According to the report, the most costly expense in Luanda is renting property. Despite the average monthly cost of renting a luxury two-bedroom apartment falling by $500 compared to last year, it still remains incredibly high at $6,500. Outside the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, African filmmakers are vying to make their mark on the movie scene.

And for many, attempting to make a film in the saturated US market is something that does not appeal. South African-raised Charlie Vundla is one of those. He just scooped the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Director for his debut film ‘How To Steal 2 Million’.

The flim noir thriller was also named Best Film at Africa’s version of the Oscars. South African actress Terry Pheto was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, which also won Best Achievement in Editing (Garreth Fradgely). Winning four awards of a possible 11 it was nominated for, ‘How To Steal 2 Million’ was the most awarded film on the night.

Vundla’s film depicts a young man struggling to adapt after being released from prison for a five-year sentence for robbery. His partner in crime and best friend, Twala, never got caught and Jack never talked, only to marry Jack’s ex-fiancee while he is behind bars. The two ex-partners are forced to team up one last time when the payoff is too big to ignore.

Vundla, a native of New York City, moved to Johannesburg as a boy before returning to the US to complete a degree in Journalism at George Washington University in Washington DC. His career began as a professional soccer reporter, covering matches across the South African domestic league.

Having spent a year writing scripts for television, Vundla enrolled in the graduate film production programme at the University of Southern California, the country’s highest ranked film school at the time. After a year, Vundla left to start up his own low-budget production company to make films that went straight to DVD and television which he did for 18 months before leaving to focus on How To Steal 2 Million.

“Although it’s set in a city with no name, I fully embraced the location of modern day Johannesburg and South Africa through an ironic, witty take on the city of gold and the country as a whole,” says Vundla.

“I feel that a South African filmmaker ignores the realities of this country at his peril. At that same time an un-nuanced portrayal risks becoming a caricature, so I’ve chosen to embrace the realities of this world in a darkly comic, subtle way.”

“The movie I’ve made is a dark, operatic, tense, moody, unsentimental tale that I hope viewers will find appealing in terms of character, scenario and aesthetics,” judging by the plaudits it has received, Vundla seems to have achieved his goal.

With the world at our fingertips in terms of internet content, the days of relying on a hotel’s description in a brochure and nervously hoping the pictures match the reality are thankfully long gone. Now, a quick Google search can lead you to hundreds of travel websites with visitor reviews on which hotels to head for in certain cities and which ones are best avoided with a bargepole.

For many, a popular starting point is the website TripAdvisor, which relies on user-generated content to give an overview of cities, towns and of course accommodation. The website’s fans will say that it is priceless for being able to tell you information about particular hotels that you wouldn’t find in the travel brochure. Its detractors, of which there are also many, will say that it offers biased reviews that can provide false information without any evidence – capable of damaging a hotel’s reputation, such is the nature of individual views and experiences.

But the TripAdvisor debate is an article for another day. As much as it can put off would-be residents of a particular hotel, equally it can drive bookings and widen a place’s appeal. The Villa Zest Boutique Hotel in Cape Town could be one of those. Voted the TripAdvisor’s Traveller’s Choice Trendiest Hotel in the World, it is described by one visitor as “an oasis in the heart of the city”.

Located just 1km from the Cape Town Central Business District, the Villa Zest is perfect for business or leisure. Cape Town’s famous Atlantic Seaboard beaches are just 5km away, while the bustling V&A Waterfront is a short walk.

For the business traveller in particular, the hotel offers total Wi-Fi coverage, even on the rooftop and poolside. A 50-inch professional plasma display screen is available in the lounge, and a complete VoIP professional telephony system which allows calls to be made at drastically reduced rates.

Also at the hotel is the Object Art Gallery, which features “the iPod and digital camera equivalents from a funky 1970s past”, where icons such as the Toot-A-Loop wrist radio are on show.

The rooms offer everything you’d expect at a top hotel – iPod docks, large-screen TVs, DVD players, bath robes etc. Each room is individually decorated to create its own sense of style and atmosphere. The hotel’s rooftop terrace offers stunning 360 degree views of the Cape Town skyline and harbour.

With rates starting at just R990 per night, the Villa Zest is certainly worth a look next time you find yourself at the home of Table Mountain.

With thousands of passengers passing through them every day and the associated hustle and bustle that goes with international travel, airports can be the most hectic of places.

Finding an area for a bit of peace and quiet while waiting for a flight therefore can be a very welcome prospect. The whole idea of airport lounges is to provide a comfortable and relaxing environment – and recently the VIP Shongololo Lounge at South Africa’sOR Tambo International Airport was named the best in the Middle East and Africa.

The lounge is available to selected business class passengers, as well as paying guests (access costs R250 per person). It has everything you’d need to unwind – whether it is TVs for entertainment, free Wi-Fi to send those urgent emails, Apple iMac workstations and shower suites to freshen up. There’s even a glass of chilled champagne to enjoy upon arrival.

Lounge owner Menzies Aviation, which is also responsible for ground handling at eight airports in South Africa, recently expanded its business in the country by creating the lounge after identifying the need for the provision of world-class luxury lounges in 2009.

The Shongololo Lounge scooped the prestigious Priority Pass award for the 2012 Lounge of the Year in Africa and the Middle East ahead of hundreds of others in the region. It picked up one of only 19 accolades awarded worldwide out of 40,000 rating submissions in the process of determining the Lounge of the Year, clinching top spot from last year’s winner from Bahrain.

The African-themed lounge, which also lays on drinks and a generous buffet, is based around a contemporary African look which creates a relaxed and stylish ambience for premium passengers awaiting their aircraft.

Forsyth Black, Menzies Senior Vice-President for Africa said that what really sets the lounge apart from the rest is its unequalled friendliness and service.

“We have built the entire Menzies business around the quality of our people, and in the luxury lounge sector, customer satisfaction is paramount. Our hospitality team has been hand-picked for their personable nature and customer focus, and dedication to the highest standards.”

Black says that the concept of the Shongololo Lounge was moulded on “prestige” – a quality that had previously been lacking in the South African airport lounge market.

“We designed a product to cater for this premium end of the lounge market, and it immediately became clear that our approach to improving the airport experience had filled a significant gap in the high-end passenger market.

“It raised the bar in a poorly served market at the time, and immediately attracted much of the premium passenger market, including airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Qantas and Qatar Airways. We are delighted to have the quality of this product, of which we are very proud, recognised by seasoned, discerning travellers from across the globe.”

There is one name among South Africa’s musical talent that has reappeared again and again over the last decade at awards ceremonies, in fashion magazines and of course, at the top of the music charts.

Female vocalist Lira has achieved more in her career so far than many artists manage in their entire career. Nominations and awards from South African Music Awards, MTV Africa Awards, Channel O Awards and MOBO Awards as well as Glamour Magazine South Africa's "Woman of the Year" have seen Lira remain at the top of the music industry.

The 33-year-old is a contemporary artist in changing times – and lays claim to being first African artist to release a blu-ray DVD. In fact, her 2009 telecast ‘Lira; Live a Celebration’ became the first Blu-Ray to go on sale in Africa and went on to secure 3x multi-platinum certification. Described as“a fusion of soul music, elements of jazz, funk, and African languages” her first five albums and her first live DVD have also achieved platinum and multi-platinum status.

Not content with being a superstar in her homeland of South Africa however, Lira is releasing her new album ‘Rise Again’ in North America in a bid to conquer the USA. "Within South Africa, I almost feel like I've done everything, I need to spread my wings and fly. I'm thirsty for it. I'm enthusiastic about it. I almost feel like I needed to take this long to get ready, to grow as a musician and a performer. Now I feel like I have something to offer,” she said.

The album draws its songs from Lira's massively popular South African releases, with ‘Feel Good’, ‘Believer’, ‘Valley of Darkness’ and the title track all on the track list.

Lira is also branching out onto the big screen this year. In May she makes her cinematic debut as the support lead in the Antonio Falduto directed drama, ‘The Italian Consul’ (‘Il console italiano’). The film premiered at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy where Lira became only the second African vocalist to grace the Teatro Del Greco stage since Miriam Makeba. The singer stars in a lead role opposite Italian actress Giuliana de Sio - as well as Edwin Angless and Anna Galiena, while the film centres on the trafficking of girls in Europe.

Lira is part of a group of African artists making an impression stateside, along with K’Naan, Nneka, and Ayo. The singer said that promoting the continent on the world stage is important.

“We're proud of being African, but there’s also a desire to be a part of the world. Part of the way we can raise the consciousness back home is when people see us rise on the world stage. We don’t do it for the individual; we do it for the entire group.”

The recently launched Puma Wilderness apparel, footwear and accessories is inspired by the landscape and climate of Africa. The collection, primarily sourced and produced in Africa using sustainable materials, has a worn, bushwhacked look and feel and addresses the element of heat.

The Puma Wilderness Collection is comprised of woven shirts, cargo shorts and pants, graphic tees, wilderness boots, a backpack and more. It features natural colours inspired by the African landscape, material and design for withstanding higher outdoor temperatures, and Puma Africa logos and environmental messages. Puma says “The apparel, accessories and footwear blend modern design with outdoor functionality for life on the streets – or in the bush.”

In the first spring/ summer 2012 Puma Wilderness collection, 94 percent of the line is produced in Africa, some at the Wildlife Works eco-factory in Kisigau, Rukinga in Kenya thereby making a significant contribution to both social and environmental sustainability in Africa. Additionally, 81 percent of the apparel styles use Fairtrade cotton, providing opportunities for workers at a fair price, while also promoting sustainable developments.

With the rate that technology moves at, you would think that there would be some kind of device available to prevent having to travel. Yes, on a smartphone you can take a photo, record a video and send them to someone across the other side of the world. Yes, emails and text messages can be sent at the touch of a button for the receiver to view in seconds. And yes, there is always the traditional phone call if even Skype fails.

Yet sometimes, nothing beats an actual face-to-face meeting. With a top-of-the-range car, travelling in style is easy. But international travel, with its stricter than ever security measures, can sometimes be far from glamorous.

For an overnight stay abroad, hand luggage would usually be adequate, but just because you have to limit luggage to one small bag it doesn’t mean your style has to suffer. The weight and size restrictions for each airline vary, yet there are some luxury cabin luggage bags on the market.

For the ultimate in luxury, English modern heritage brand Globe-Trotter makes some gorgeous cases. Preferred by such high profile characters as explorer Sir Edmund Hilary and even HRH Queen Elizabeth II, who apparently used a Globe-Trotter case on her honeymoon and does to this day, don’t expect a case to come cheap.

The brand’s Safari collection, which is a nod back to the cases made by Globe-Trotter in the late 1920s, is furnished with non-dyed natural leather trimming that darkens and ages over time. Made to last, the Ivory & Natural 18 inch Trolley Case, with wheels and a pull out handle is practical, yet ultra-classy. Priced at £725 (around US$1,100), it is available at http://www.globetrotter1897.com.

Another luxury British label, Mulberry, although perhaps more famous for its women’s bags, offers a wide selection of leather holdalls perfect for hand luggage. Its Henry Trolley Case, in black textured nylon ticks all of the boxes. Streamline, lightweight and super versatile, it oozes luxury. With external compartments to place travel documents you want to keep at-hand and classic Mulberry gold hardware, heads will be turning at check-in. Get your hands on it for £595 ($910) at http://www.mulberry.com.

Our third and final choice needs no introduction. Louis Vuitton accessories are world-famous and it’s easy to see why. The Pegase 55 Business at £2,050 has been especially crafted with the executive in mind. A spacious exterior padded compartment is ideal for holding a laptop, while a smaller compartment can hold essential items. The expandable handle can be locked in two positions and if you want to keep your purchase looking shiny and new, it comes with an easy attachable sleeve that completely covers the case on-board. The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off later today in Equatorial Guinea.

Co-hosted by Gabon, the tournament begins with Equatorial Guinea taking on Libya in the 37,500 capacity Bata Stadium, followed by Senegal against Zambia.

This year’s competition is without some of the best FIFA ranked African football Nations. Holders Egypt, the first side to win three titles in a row, did not even qualify this time around. Nor did Algeria, Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa – meaning five of the confederation’s top FIFA ranked teams will be missing.

The qualifying stage produced a number of shocks – the biggest of all when South Africa falsely celebrated after believing they had won the group and with it qualification. Unfortunately for them, regulations in place meant that if points were level it came down to head-to-head stats and outsiders Niger finished top and qualified for the first time.

Below are the Groups and dates for the knockout stages of the tournament:

Group A: Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Senegal, Zambia.

Group B: Ivory Coast, Sudan, Burkina Faso, Malabo.

Group C: Gabon, Niger, Morocco, Tunisia.

Group D: Ghana, Botswana, Mali, Guinea.

	Quarter-Finals:

	1. 04/02/12: 1st A v 2nd B, Bata
2. 04/02/12: 1st B v 2nd A, Malabo
3. 05/02/12: 1st C v 2nd D, Libreville
4. 05/02/12: 1st D v 2nd C, Franceville

	Semi-Finals:

	08/02/12: QF1 winner v QF4 winner, Bata
08/02/12: QF3 winner v QF2 winner, Libreville

	3rd place play-off: 11/02/2012, Malabo

	Final: 12/02/2012, Libreville
