Trump will Meet Kenya’s President on Trade & Business

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta will meet President Donald Trump in Washington this week to announce negotiations on a free trade agreement, America’s first agreement with a sub-Saharan country.

Based on the official presidency schedule, the two countries will hold a bilateral meeting which was expanded on 6 February 2020.

Previously, the East African nation’s cabinet on January 30, 2020 approved the start of talks with the US for a trade agreement that would help Kenyan goods to have smooth access to the US market, especially when the African Growth Opportunities Act expires.

The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) agreement which provides 39 African countries duty-free access to the US for around 6,500 products ranging from textiles to manufactured goods, ends in 2025.

Reported by Bloomberg, Monday (02/02/2020), the Trump administration wants the agreement to be a model for future agreements with African countries. Macharia Kamau, Kenya’s chief secretary for foreign affairs, said his government expected real progress on the agreement in the third quarter of this year.
