Mauritius tourism numbers increase

Inidan Ocean island sees 7.5 percent increase in tourism receipts in first half of 2018.

Mauritius saw a 7.5 percent increase in gross tourism receipts in the first half of 2011 to 21.3 billion rupees, according to data released on Thursday.

The central statistics office said tourist arrivals to the island in the Indian Ocean rose 5.8 percent to 439,150.

The country has suffered during the economic recession along with other long-haul luxury destinations, with hotels offering discounted rates to try and lure tourists to the destination.

Tourism revenue for the whole year is forecast to be around 42.5 billion rupees, a 7.7 percent increase from 2010.

First half arrivals from Europe rose by 3.8 percent, with French arrivals increasing by 5.6 percent and German arrivals by 5.9 percent.
